Transdisciplinary Co-Design to Envision the Needs of the Intensive Care Unit of the Future

Proceedings of the International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care · Mar 1 2019

Healthcare research can be challenging. In a complex, detail rich and dynamic environment like an intensive care unit it is easy for outside observers to miss important nuances to how healthcare personnel manage the demands of their work (Nemeth et al, 2016). This case study introduces innovations from the design field to practitioners in healthcare who may be responsible for quality improvement, patient safety and Lean improvement initiatives.

In November 2017, the university announced plans for a new 840 bed hospital tower to replace aging infrastructure and accommodate increasing health care needs and technologies of the future (Ohio State News, 2017). The leadership team of multidisciplinary practitioners (MDs & NPs) working across the SICUs at the University Hospital & the James Cancer Hospitals recognized an opportunity to influence the design of the ‘Intensive Care Unit of the future’ to better support healthcare workers, ICU patients and their families. In this project, we focused on the front end of the design process to explore future scenarios of use at the OSU Wexner Medical Center (WMC).
